How Often Should You Wash Your Face?
Twice a day is the answer you will find everywhere, and it is a reasonable default. It is also the reason a lot of dry and sensitive skin stays irritated, because for that skin the correct number is one.
The frequency question has a real answer, and it depends on what is actually on your face.
Start from what needs removing#
A cleanse is justified by what it removes. Work backwards from that rather than from a rule.
| Time | What is on your skin | Cleanse needed? |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Overnight sebum, pillow contact | Only if visibly oily |
| Midday | Sweat, pollution | No — rinse if uncomfortable |
| Evening, no sunscreen | Sebum, pollution, sweat | Yes, mild |
| Evening, with sunscreen | Sunscreen film | Yes, thorough |
| Evening, sunscreen and make-up | Both | Yes — oil first, then wash |
| After exercise | Sweat, salt | Rinse or mild cleanse |
The evening cleanse is the one nobody should skip. Sleeping in sunscreen or make-up is the change with the clearest downside.
By skin type#
- Oily: twice a day, plus a rinse after heavy sweat. A third full cleanse increases oil production, not the reverse.
- Combination: twice a day, or once if your T-zone is not obviously oily in the morning.
- Normal: once or twice. Either works.
- Dry: once, in the evening. Water in the morning.
- Sensitive or eczema-prone: once, in the evening, with a mild cream cleanser.
Signs you are washing too often#
- Tightness immediately after washing that only eases with moisturiser.
- Flaking around the nostrils and the corners of the mouth, which show damage first.
- Stinging when a serum or sunscreen goes on.
- Oily skin producing more oil, earlier in the day, than it used to.
- New redness that appears without a new product.
Every one of those improves within two weeks of cutting one cleanse per day. It costs nothing to test and it is the most commonly missed fix in an over-complicated routine.
Signs you are not washing enough#
Persistent congestion around the nose and chin, make-up that will not sit properly, and a face that feels coated on waking after a night with sunscreen still on. Under-washing is a far less common problem than over-washing, but it exists — particularly among people who read one article about barrier damage and stopped cleansing altogether.
Exercise, heat and humid climates#
Sweat itself is not dirty, but it carries salt and mixes with sunscreen and sebum. A lukewarm rinse after exercise handles it. A full cleanse each time is only necessary if you were wearing make-up or a heavy sunscreen — otherwise water is enough and costs your barrier nothing.
Frequently asked questions
Is washing your face twice a day too much?
For oily and combination skin, no. For dry, sensitive or eczema-prone skin, often yes — once in the evening with water in the morning is usually better. The default advice is a reasonable starting point, not a rule.
What happens if I do not wash my face at night?
Sunscreen, make-up, sebum and the day sit on the skin for eight hours. That is the reliable route to congestion around the nose and chin, and to make-up that will not apply properly the next day. The evening cleanse is the one to protect.
Should I wash my face after exercise?
A lukewarm rinse is usually enough — sweat is mostly water and salt. Use a full cleanse if you were wearing make-up or a water-resistant sunscreen during the workout.
