The Best Face Wash: How We Judge One (and How You Can)
A best face wash list is a category that mostly exists to be monetised. The products at the top are usually the ones with an affiliate programme, and the ranking rarely survives contact with a different skin type.
We do not publish one. What we publish is the scorecard, so you can rank the shelf in front of you.
The scorecard#
| Criterion | Weight | How to check it |
|---|---|---|
| Surfactant mildness | High | First five ingredients: isethionate, glucoside, betaine names |
| pH | High | Brand website, or pH strips at home |
| Barrier support | High | Glycerin, ceramides, fatty alcohols in the list |
| Absence of triggers | Medium | No fragrance, denatured alcohol, menthol |
| Rinses clean | Medium | No film after drying |
| Price per month | Low | Millilitres divided by daily use |
| Texture and scent | Low | Preference — but it decides whether you keep using it |
The last row is weighted low and matters more than the weighting suggests. A cleanser you dislike is a cleanser you skip, and a skipped evening cleanse costs more than a slightly imperfect formula.
What disqualifies a face wash immediately#
- Saponified soap names — sodium palmate, sodium tallowate, sodium cocoate — for facial use.
- Sodium lauryl sulfate in the first three ingredients.
- Denatured alcohol high in the list.
- Physical scrub particles in a product marketed for daily use.
- Menthol, camphor or peppermint in a product aimed at sensitive or acne-prone skin.
How to run your own test#
- Buy the smallest size available. A full-size bottle of something that does not suit you is a wasted purchase and a waste of the product.
- Use it alone for two weeks. Change nothing else.
- Assess at twenty minutes after washing, not at thirty seconds. Comfortable, not tight, not coated.
- Photograph in the same light at day one and day fourteen.
- Keep or return. Most retailers accept returns on opened skincare; the ones that do not are worth avoiding.
Why we do not name products#
Formulations change without notice, availability differs by country, and a ranking of five products is obsolete within a year while continuing to collect search traffic. Worse, a named list creates a commercial incentive that quietly shapes editorial judgement even when nobody intends it to.
The scorecard does not expire. A product named in 2024 may not exist, may have been reformulated, or may never have been sold where you live.
The honest summary#
A good face wash is unremarkable. It removes the day, leaves your skin feeling like skin, does not sting, and costs little enough that you use it generously. If you have found one that does that, there is nothing better to upgrade to — the money is better spent on sunscreen and on a treatment that stays on your face.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best face wash?
There is no single answer, because the right cleanser depends on your skin type, what you wear during the day and what you react to. What is portable between people is the scorecard: mild surfactants, pH 4.5–6.5, glycerin and ceramides present, no fragrance or denatured alcohol.
Why do you not publish a top ten list?
Because formulations change, availability differs by country, and such lists are usually monetised through affiliate links — which creates a reason to prefer expensive products. The criteria stay useful for years; a product list does not.
Is an expensive face wash worth it?
Rarely. A cleanser is rinsed off, so there is a low ceiling on what any ingredient can achieve. Price mostly buys texture, fragrance and packaging. In a routine, spend the money on sunscreen and on leave-on treatments.
