Start from how your skin feels twenty minutes after washing, not from your skin type as a label. If it feels tight, squeaky or itchy, the cleanser is too stripping whatever the bottle claims. If it still feels greasy or coated, it is not clearing enough. Comfortable and slightly plump is the target. From there, match the format to your skin: gel and foaming cleansers suit oily and combination skin, cream and milk cleansers suit dry and sensitive skin, and micellar or oil cleansers suit anyone removing sunscreen or make-up. ### How often should I wash my face? Twice a day for most people: once in the morning and once at night. The evening wash is the one that matters, because it removes sunscreen, make-up, sweat and the day’s pollution. If your skin is dry or sensitive, water alone in the morning is often enough and a second cleanse can do more harm than good. Washing more than twice a day is one of the most common causes of the tight, irritated skin people then try to fix with another product. ### What ingredients should I look for in a face wash? It depends on your concern, and less than the marketing suggests. Salicylic acid helps with blackheads and clogged pores because it works inside the pore. Benzoyl peroxide targets acne bacteria but bleaches fabric and can irritate. Glycerin, ceramides and panthenol support the skin barrier and belong in almost any cleanser. Niacinamide is useful but does far more in a serum than in something you rinse off after thirty seconds. The bigger win is usually what is absent: high concentrations of drying alcohol, harsh sulfates in an already dry skin, and fragrance if you are sensitive. ### Is a foaming or a non-foaming cleanser better? Neither is better in the abstract — foam is a texture, not a quality signal. A rich foam feels satisfying and rinses clean, which suits oily and combination skin. Cream, milk and balm cleansers leave more lipids behind, which suits dry, mature and sensitive skin. What matters is the surfactant system rather than the lather: a well-formulated foaming cleanser can be gentler than a badly formulated cream one. ### Can a face wash clear acne on its own? Rarely, and expecting it to is where a lot of money gets wasted. A cleanser is on the skin for under a minute, so even an active ingredient has little contact time. A salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide wash can help with mild congestion and works well alongside a leave-on treatment, but moderate to severe acne — painful, deep or scarring spots — needs treatment a dermatologist prescribes. If three months of consistent care has changed nothing, that is the signal to stop switching cleansers and get a diagnosis. ### Does an expensive face wash work better? Not reliably. A cleanser is rinsed off, which puts a low ceiling on what any ingredient can do, and the surfactants that do the actual work are inexpensive and well understood. Price mostly buys texture, fragrance, packaging and brand. Where money is worth spending in a routine, it is usually on the products that stay on the skin: sunscreen, and a treatment that suits your concern.
